Our Story

Who are we and what do we do?

At the Root Theatre is a theatre company based in West Lothian working with children, young people and adults to amplify and empower the voices of different communities, people and places through theatre, film and music.

At the Root was established in 2015 to create opportunities for people to engage with regular creative activity such as drama workshops, music classes and different creative projects. We started off with a group of six young people coming to both of our groups in one venue, now we have over one hundred children and young people engaging regularly in our activities across multiple venues in West Lothian.

We believe in facilitating creative, joyful and playful spaces for people to grow in confidence, make new friends and develop life skills. At the Root believes that creative activities can create positive transformational change in communities, people and places. Our ethos is to welcome everyone, be kind and create positive experiences for our participants.

Our Mission

Our mission is to widen access to high quality, fun and creative activities for children, young people and adults across West Lothian. We want to facilitate joyful, playful and create spaces for people to grow in confidence, make new friends and develop new skills.

We are developing and delivering a creative programme that is participant-led. We want to identify and respond to the interests and needs of the communities we are working in. This could mean delivering weekly workshops in a local venue or working with local and national partners to develop and deliver specific projects in the area.

At the Root also aims to support and nurture emerging and early-career artists based in Scotland. We want to create fairly paid and collaborative work for creatives living and working in Scotland.

Our Vision

Our vision has always been to create spaces in communities where local people and stories are celebrated. We believe that everyone should have access to regular creative activity that benefits their physical and mental health while improving their quality of life. At the Root wants to work in communities to ensure that everyone has fair access to creative activities where they live.

Our aim is to develop and deliver a programme of weekly workshops and projects that speak to all ages, abilities and interests. In the next five years, we want to introduce more children and young people workshops, launch projects for those with additional support needs and restart our creative programme for adults.
